How can I perform a Clean Uninstall of QuickBooks

On rare occasions, it may be necessary to manually remove QuickBooks installation files and folders left behind by the Microsoft® Add or Remove Programs utility. Performing this procedure is often referred as a "clean install" or a "clean uninstall", and may help isolate or resolve problems with QuickBooks.

Important:

  • A "clean uninstall" requires all other Intuit software applications that share the same installation folder to be reinstalled. If you need to preserve your old QuickBooks installation folders and file names, refer to the article Installing QuickBooks in a new installation folder for troubleshooting and resolving issues, which explains how to rename your QuickBooks installation folder using the file extension ( .OLD).
  • Back up your company file to a safe location to prevent it from being accidentally deleted or overwritten.
  • Have your QuickBooks installation CD-ROM and product numbers handy before reinstalling QuickBooks.

 To perform a clean uninstall: 

  1. Click the Start button and select Settings>Control Panel.

  2. Select Add/Remove Programs (in Windows Vista select Programs > Programs and Features).

  3. Select Quickbooks and click Change or Remove Programs (in Windows Vista select Uninstall).

  4. Repeat steps 1 though 3 above to also uninstall the QuickBooks Product Listing service.

  5. The clean uninstall procedure requires manually removing or renaming some QuickBooks installation folders.

    Note: Removing the entire Intuit folder removes all subfolders that are contained within it.

    If you do not have other Intuit products installed on your computer (such as Quicken, QuickTax, ProFile, other versions of QuickBooks, etc), remove or rename the Intuit folders listed below:

On Windows XP/2000:

  • C:\Program Files\Intuit

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit

  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit

  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Common Files\Intuit

On Windows Vista/Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Data\Intuit

  • C:\Program Data\Common Files\Intuit

  • C:\Users\<current user>\AppData\Local\Intuit

  • C:\Program Files\Intuit

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit

If you do have other Intuit products installed on your computer, remove or rename only the Intuit folders listed below:

On Windows XP/2000:

  • C:\Program Files\Intuit

On Windows Vista/Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Data\Intuit

If the Application Data or Program Data folder is not visible:

On Windows XP/2000:

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Explore.

  2. Select the Tools menu, and select Folder options.

  3. Click the View tab, and select Show hidden files and folders in the Advanced settings field.

  4. Click OK.

On Windows Vista/Windows 7:

  1. Click the Start button and select Computer.

  2. In the upper left corner, click the Organize button.

  3. Select Folder and Search Options.

  4. Click the View tab and click Show hidden files and folders.

  5. Click OK.

Once QuickBooks is completely removed from your system, you may proceed with a new installation to determine if your issue is resolved.
