Update your employee tax codes
On 13th May, 2008, the Chancellor announced a change to the basic Personal Allowance for the 2008-2009 tax year. The following Income Tax Bandwidth information has changed:
| Item | 2008-2009 (up to 6th September) | 2008-2009 (from 7th September) |
| Basic Rate | 20% up to £36000 | 20% up to £34800 |

As a result of the legislative changes, many employee tax codes are changing. If an employee's tax code must be changed, manually change the code in QuickBooks to be effective from the first payday on or after 7th September, 2008. To view a list of the tax code changes and for further information on how this affects your payroll, visit www.hmrc.gov.uk/employers/epa-basicrate.htm.
Important: You will need to process all payrolls with pay dates up to the 6th September, 2008 before updating your employee tax codes. If the tax codes are changed before this, you will be unable to pay your employees for pay dates prior to 7th September.
