What do I need to know about working with my upgraded QuickBooks 2008 company file?

The following are important differences between QuickBooks 2008 and previous versions, along with other important information for upgraders.

New features in QuickBooks Pro and QuickBooks Premier

(QuickBooks Pro/Premier only.) There are many new features in QuickBooks 2008. Some of the major ones are as follows.

New user interface: The user interface has been greatly improved from previous versions. The Home Page displays a complete workflow of your business's accounting process, from estimates to invoices to payroll. The QuickBooks Centres consolidate all the key information about your customers, suppliers, and employees. For more details, see How can I get around in the new user interface for QuickBooks 2008?.

QuickBooks Server: When configuring multi-user access for a QuickBooks system, you can now install a standalone QuickBooks Server to host your company file. For more details, see How do I set up a QuickBooks network or multi-user environment?.

Changes in VAT

VAT setup: The way VAT is configured within QuickBooks has changed. You may want to familiarise yourself with the new VAT system.

VAT reports for previous VAT periods: Due to changes in how VAT is tracked, reports are not available for VAT periods that were completed in your previous version of QuickBooks. If you want to view VAT reports for past VAT periods, open your original company file in your previous version of QuickBooks. For help finding your company file, see I upgraded my company file to QuickBooks 2008. Where is my original company file and where is my upgraded file?

Other feature changes

Multicurrency: Multicurrency is not supported in QuickBooks 2008. For more details, see How will the Multicurrency feature change in QuickBooks 2008?

Units of Measure: The Units of Measure feature has been moved to QuickBooks Premier. In addition, QuickBooks no longer uses a separate "stocking" unit—the unit for items you have in stock will be the smallest base unit in the item's unit of measure set. For more details, see I upgraded to QuickBooks 2008. What happened to my units of measure?.

Sales Orders and Stock Parts: These features have been moved to QuickBooks Premier. If you have QuickBooks Pro, you can work with existing sales orders and stock parts, but you cannot create new ones.

Customised business forms and memorised reports: Forms customisation has been greatly improved. Because of this, however, memorised reports and customised business forms cannot be upgraded and will have to be recreated in QuickBooks 2008. Also, report templates that were exported from a previous version of QuickBooks are incompatible with QuickBooks 2008. For more details, see What happened to the forms (e.g. invoices) and report templates that I customised when I upgrade to QuickBooks 2008?.

Accountant's Copy: Accountant's Copy files saved in earlier versions of QuickBooks cannot be opened as an Accountant's Copy in QuickBooks 2008. You can either open the company file in the earlier version of QuickBooks or convert the Accountant's Copy to a regular company file. For more details, see I just upgraded to QuickBooks 2008, and I can't open the Accountant's Copy version of a company file..
